is this true?

I was reading about the annoying speedometer error we are experiencing on our 1290's and it seems most are about 10% except for poor ktmguy's 16%. But what I also read was the odometer is off by 4-5%. Wouldn't the odometer also be of by 10% since the speed is? Or is it really set up to only be 4-5%, which would actually make me feel a little better since it won't show my bike having 10% more mileage than it really has.

This is true for the 990 as they are linked I believe.
For the 1290 they can run separate as it is all just electronics.
Kevxtx did some tests on the 1290 with a GPS and the odo is only out by a few %

On my 1290 I can tell the odometer is off with no instrumentation other than eye sight. With mile maker signs look at the reading just as you pass the sign. Every sign I pass the odometer changes noticeable amount which seems to be about 50 yards/meters earlier than the last. Other bikes I've had that I knew the speedometer/odometer was off, it would take several mile maker signs before I could tell the difference.

i mounted my gps to my 1290
it is 10% fast, speedo said 65,gps 59
speedo 110 ,gps 98
these were steady speeds as i was
cruising the back roads
so i now know

I know, I used to think the 5-7% on other bikes was ridiculous. I guess the more you pay the higher the percentage. Just hope 10% isn't their allowable percentage of error on the rest of their bike!

I agree with you Jonnyrotton. That the odo and speedo have different errors is bullshit. Distance = speed x time. So the only explanation for a difference is that the clock is also inaccurate. Hard to believe, but from what I've heard about the new bike so far, wouldn't put it past em!
