Starter clutch. Common problem allegedly. Symptoms are an earth-shattering crack on start-up/turn over. Followed by silence as the engine doesn't fire. Try again and it will work. If the frequency of the cracks! to attempts to start the bike approach 1-to-1 you're nearing end-of-live on it.

I had an aprilia do this to me just out of warranty. cost a fortune to fix. My SD did the same thing but luckily for me just recently...so it's fixed now.

that was the first thing I had done when i bought it....what a racket it made!! but not any more...

Apparantly the torque limiter fix KTM still covers even if it is out of warranty I was told. That noise is definately not something you like to hear coming out of your bike..
