MotoBox...First Ride!

Hey boys and girls,

What I'm about to tell you is no joke!

Beg, borrow or steal the $275 to buy this airbox. It is the single best mod I've made to this bike powerwise. It absolutely launches out of corners like a cat luanch off an aircraft carrier. The difference is nothing short of incredible. I still can't wipe the smile off of my face.

The bike was quick before but holy SHITE. I knew it'd be an improvement but I wasn't expecting it would be so substantial.

Moto, Joe and anyone else who has posted about this mod have not done it justice. By my uncalibrated but dyno I'd say we are looking at between 7-8 hp in the mid and 5-6 on top. Not kidding.

Added bonus....the bike runs smoother from idle to redline. It actually cleared up the residual on-off throttle snatch that was still evident even after the custom mapping.

I can't say enough about the improvement. If you've been on the fence about this airbox...time to jump off and do it. Be warned...you might might want to invest in some dental work because everyone will see your teeth from a mile away due to the smile permanently etched on your face.

Moto, you'd better fire up that mill. I have a feeling the orders are gonna come pouring in.

Standing next to the bike while bliping the throttle your barely notice an increase in noise. The only time you hear the difference is while riding (the tank is directly beneath your head). It sounds good and does not make the bike obnoxiously loud at all.

It's been 2 hours since I got back from my ride, just walked by the mirror, yep...smile is still there!

Was just sitting here in the garage smoking one of Cuba's finest pondering as to why the Moto box is so much better than the stock box and it's obvious really. The stock box has a 3.5" x 1.25" opening which is supposed to provide all of the air necessary to allow this engine to run.

Obviously such a small opening cannot deal with the required amount of air for 2 500cc cylinders. When those pistons suck the required amount of air from the air box that small opening cannot possibly fill the void in time for the next intake charge.

The Moto box solves this issue by giving you enough filter surface area to facilitate a small block Chevy!

Good on-ya Moto. This bike now rips!

John, This is great news. If you had followed me through my SD.Net life, you would see that some people have accused me of being no trustworthy source

for accurate information. I do my best to not insult a persons intellect... but none the less I am attacked from time to time.

This is one reason that I try expeditiously not to offend. Much is lost in translation of the feelings and facts.

My initial reaction was a mirror image of your discovery, other than my intake noise is damn loud!! sounds like a raw blown/injected big block chevy.. I love it!!

This translation can also be miscomprehended to have dastardly motives which I do not have towards anyone here.

Thanks for sharing. It is good to see these good things happening from moto's hard work.

hey John, Thatis great news about the moto air box set up! I was kinda on the fence about gittin one, but now I am sure. do you think it needs a remap? or just the manual adjustment on the PC 3? nice to hear from you . Tim

Hey Tim,

I didn't touch a thing. I left the map that Mickey did in the PCIII. There is no lean surge, snatchyness or any negative symptoms. I thought it'd go lean but no such worries. It did get rid of the exhaust smell you get on yer leathers after riding for a bit so obviously it leaned it out a smidge.

Dade: I'm running the Leo Vince Carbon slip-ons with dB killers in and also 2" flat disks (with nine 10mm holes drilled in them) between the mid pipe and silencers for extra noise supression.

I do wear ear plugs. I always have. It's not because of engine noise, it's because of wind noise.

Hi CrotchRocketeer, the SAS hoses are the ones you are referring to, you are to remove these. this mod is easy, just a few things to remember to do and esp. not to do.

#1: do not remove the throttle cables, (don't change this throttle cable setting or you will have to go back to the dealer for resetting of the servo stepper motors/ecu).

#2: do not disconnect the wiring harness from the individual TB's, there is a gang plug that is located near the coolant reservoir/catch tank, this is the only wire disconnect necessary except for the 2 others, first is the one on the top of the air box and the next is the one going to the SAS valve. Keep the TB's together and do not attempt to separate them.

I suspended the TB with a wire hanger or short bungy cord. The block off cylinder head plates can easily be made, but if you do not have the knowledge or equipment there are a couple of alternatives, you could use the existing elbows and weld the holes (temporary at best), or buy the BO plates from many ktm sources. There's loads of information in here for this mod, I know it is hard to find if you do not know where to look. Beware of the tank strut, the 2 back pivot mounts have a rubber element to them and will recenter when the tank is in the raised position, when you lower the tank the front mount bolt hole will no longer line-up, this is worth asking about and do not force anything in this mod, best to ask questions, the answers are all here in the forum.

Hey Joe,

I still haven't removed my SAS valve. I installed the block off plates a while ago but just left the valve hanging there. When I installed the Motobox I modified the stock SAS bracket to fit on the back of the throttle body and once again left the valve hanging there. Kinda cheesy but fun watching the valve plunger try to let fresh air into the heads without hoses while blipping the throttle.

Was planning on doing it soon. I underswtand from your 'how to' post you used a 1K ohm resistor. Was that a 1/4 watt resistor? How is that resistor holding up (brown or charcoal colored yet? ) Light still out?

Thanks, John

So youre saying I'm going to need these Joe?

Does anyone make any that are less gay than these? or at least orange.

Oh dear I may have gone over my head with this one, yeah I just noticed my tank doesn't go back down right, what a POS. If we werent denied the cool stuff over here I would load this fekker up with the tank still jacked up and trade it off for a brand new CB1000RR. Oh well.

Motohooligan

I will have SAS blockoff plates for $20 ready to ship same time as the K&N's

Better get off the X-wifes laptop befor I get caught

Yeah this is trouble, the control valve (2) talks to the ECU, but can be fooled with a resistor?

Cant find the part in the manual where the TB's are removed, it shows
carbs., uh oh.
