Plipton..... trouble is like all huggers its mounted to the swingarm,so when the rear wheel is adjusted to take up the chain slack it moves rearwards and further away from the hugger,this is more so if the front sprocket has been swapped for the 16 tooth version,when the chain is new i guess it would be as close as you suggest, but only for a short period of time,the standard little guard is not close to the wheel,and this one just follows the lines of that one just on a longer arc....... the longer the hugger is the more chance of it vibrating,i had a longer one on my buell which looked great,unfortunatly it was banging off the top of the tyre whilst i was riding along....... as a shock guard as this is designed for,its going to do a better job..... ever thought of changing your chain lube by the way? i usr castrol chain wax and have no problems with fling onto the underneath of the bike,so the standard leangth of the chainguard is fine for me
