Hi Guys
I've got a vintage 05/06 SD (yer.. i'm a member of the old guard . The oil cap on it has always leaked. This is something I have always put up with. Over the years, it has got worse and worse. Now, I want to do something about it. I was wondering if the oil cap is meant to do this (ie: Does it act like a relief valve ?).
I noticed that the oil cap has a seal on it, so that tells me it is not meant to leak. The lubrication system has a pressure relief unit (See Diagram Reference 5, Page 2-2, 2003-2005 Repair Manual 3.206.025-E). So it appears the engine does have pressure relief mechanism.
To fault the problem, I am going to fit a temporary seal. This seal will plug the oil cap's leakage. However, I want to first check with some of you mechanical gurus that the oil cap is not meant to act like a relief valve, as I don't want to make an assumption and then damage my engine. Note: If the oil cap is not meant to leak and I can then go ahead and confirm fault, and then order a new oil cap (or oil cap seal).
Any advice/opinions is appreciated
Cheers J
