I own a 990 Superduke which has used nearly 4 liters of oil in 2800 kms! Great bike but that is way to much oil. The dealer would rather think of me as incompetent rather than fix the problem. I owned a RSVR for 5 years before, so I know how to check the oil level on a dry sump engine. Did you ask for a replacement 990? Please let me know. Thanks

I expect the oil consumption issue has to do with the crankcase breather valve removal not being done on my bike eventhough KTM sent a recall notice in June of 2005. The over pressure in the crankcases would blow the halfmoon rubber seals between the valve cover and the head, on the rear cylinder. Oil on the tyre, safety issue, blah blah blah. In my case it probably blew the valve stem seals instead. which may account for the excessive oil consumption. On a side note Motorex has developped a 20/60 weight apparently at KTM's request to allievate the oil consumption in the LC8 engines.

thats an interesting situation, has anyone else heard about that, you guys in europe might hear about it before us guys down here in Oz

Just to say. That the crankcase breather problem was initially found on my First SD and it is the reason I am on my 2nd.

My initial bike was back and forth to the dealers getting remapped to rid this bike of the poor low rev stutters.
It was after the first service.(The adjust V/V clearence one) that after picking up the bike. I drove 5 miles.Only for the bike to spew it's Oil over my left boot and the rear tyre
This was the last straw for me> So I demanded a new bike or my money back.

Got New Bike NEXT DAY!! Mapped and with breather problem sorted (For that is what it was).

I have No Loss of oil problems at all in 2500miles /4000KMS and this is with fairly hard riding.

BTW. Any of the folks with the 16tooth sprocket conversion noticed oil on chain/dripping down the sidestand? Check your driveseal. It's easily mislodged on sprocket removal/replacement.

Glad to hear your confirmation of the breather issue with the 990. It tends to confirm that the pressure build up in the crankcases can actually blow off a seal. I guess the weakest link on my bike must be the valve stems seals. The front cylinder has two oil lines going from the valve cover back to the oil tank, which is probably why only the rear cylinder seems to be affected. Any ways I'll keep you all posted. The bike has been sitting at the dealer ship for over two weeks now. Supposedly to confirm my oil consumption #'! Trust is rampant around here.

Bikes done 2k mls and it's used about 1.5 ltr. ( 2 trackdays, and a long weekend at the Nurburgring) 10/60 fully synth

Perhaps this will change with additional miles, but I've put on just under 1,000 miles since my first service and there is no noticeable change in the oil level. If relevant, I use it to bomb around on country roads on the weekends and for commuting two or three days a week. Didn't you have some major engine trouble early on? I hope it's not related and that all is well.

I had visited a fellow SD owner last night and he had said something

of an oil consumption issue, he did not specify how much he had been
adding.

My 07 SD has not used any measureable amounts that I have noticed,

I change my oil every 1000-1200 miles, so maybe that is why I

have not added any between changes. now at 4000 mi's

I can only say that when and how you check your oil level esp. during oil

changes is a Strange issue? Reason I say is....I always put more than

what the instructions say to, but it is not too specific, so when I change it,

before I put the cover on, I ride it a short while then park and wait 2-3

min's then check it, over all I am putting nearly 4 ltr or qt. with about

three to four ounces left. It is the same on this bike as the 06 SM I had.

At the rate mine is using it at least it ain't gonna need an oil change, it is always crystal clear in the sight glass

mcgiggle, How often do you change the oil and filter? It is a common misconception that adding to, is the same as changing, not so, the bad stuff stays in the engine.

joe,
yeah bud only done 2k mls, it will get changed when needed, thanks for rhe prompt

Mine's done 4650 miles and it's had two oil and filter changes, apart from that i've added a least another two litre's of oil if not more.
I mentioned this fact to my dealer on the second service,he told me that according to KTM my high oil consumption was in fact just "normal consumption " and not to worry
I've never owned a bike that use's so much oil so i'm concerned and keep a carefull eye on the level.I must addmit i ride it hard on the roads and give it some stick on track day's but that's why i bought it,so if KTM arn't over concerned about the high consumption then maybe i should'nt be.
At the end of the day a few litre's more oil is i suppose a small price to pay for the sheer adrenalin pumping fun i get out of thrashing the nuts off it

Greetings from Victoria Australia.Short time member, first time poster.Since my 06 SD had its 1000km service it has been using oil.The bike now has 4000km on it and twice in 3000km the oil level has dropped from the max mark to below the min mark. There is no smoke coming from the exhaust and no obvious external leaks.Any assistance would be appreciated, cheers Thommo!

Answer seems to be they use 1l of oil in 1000km's approx.

They all do that...

it's the way of the world .

mine used about 1l in about 6 months, which is about 10000 miles for me. Thats only a rough estimate though as I didnt follow it very closely. However I've only ever used 1l of oil for top up since i bought it 12000 miles ago.

I did not have to add oil prior to my first service. Shortly after my first service I had to add most of a litre. I've not had to add since then (although the oil level has dropped some). I have no idea where the oil went. When you add, do it in small increments - it's easy to overfill.

smoky,,,, I was thinking the same thing, my thunder pumpkin has not consumed any or very little oil, But..... I change mine frequently.

I change it on average @ 1500 miles or every 60 days , I work on jap cars for a living, I do allot of internal engine repairs.

this makes me realise that too may oil changes may put a dent in yer wallet in a small sense but is nothing compared to repairs.

the line of thinking is.... it is under warranty, but I would not want to depend on the dealer to repair cra* cos they seem to be incompetent. in tulsa ok.

an unrelated question:
i think most, if not all of us here, are of age, and if you have a bike licence, you must be at least 16, so... do we have to use cr*p, sh*t, fook etc?? is there some forum rule, writen or not, that prevents us from swearing here? i don't want to offend anyone...
would anyone be ofended if i was to post a message with said words spelled correctly?

try it! the forum automatically censors it. I'm NO fan of censorship but I dont mind this....it kinda reminds me of why we use bad words adn in an odd way gives them the weight they used to have.

Besides, I kinda have fun writing them in a roundabout way. My fave is writing ©unt.
