Took my sd out for a spin today.....after around 60 mile i noticed oil on my left boot, a closer inspection revealed oil all over my lower crash bobbin and i can see oil coming from the lower oil tank mounting point and going onto the silver Y-piece bracket that it attaches onto.....cant seem to see where it is coming from.....is there anything i need to be checking around that area guys?

I'm curious as to what makes you jump to the cracked head conclusion Soundccduke? No mention of losing any coolant at the same time, oil in coolant or loss or performance which might indicate a cracked head. I'd be checking all other options before jumping to that very scary and expensive conclusion.

I have just taken delivery of my wonderful SD and I love it! I have done approximately 350mls however it has just developed a slight oil leak not major but some oil is finding is way onto the top of the fairing housing around the battery, just below the oil housing and rad, i'm checking the oil levels regularly and it doesn't appear to be showing signs of lossing any, it is still around the max mark, the dealer doesn't appeared to be concerned and just asked my to keep am eye on it until the first service, any throughts.

Welcome to the forum, i reckon it's worth just checking the filler cap to be sure it's on tight. It's behind the right hand panel on the side of the tank.

Thanks D4NPH - i think/hope its something simple like a loss cap or hose, i will have a check over it tonight.

tony,
I am watching my SD as we speak from the same area,

If you take the drain plug out of the tank with the sidestand down, you will

see that it drains right down ontop of and into the electrical stuff under it,

my thinking is, that if you follow all the instructions for adding engine oil,

and your engine system is full, per to the ktm owners manual, that this is

residual oil that is held in those wire wrapper things that go to the

sidestand switch, rear 02 sensor, ect. just an active thougth on my part.

Was the inner clutch gasket replaced with a new one after a water pump seal replacement?

AGRO!

I had a bit of oil on my engine one time similar to yours and it ended up being the oil filler cap was not tightened up enough.
The oil was running down the oil tank and dropping onto the engine.

Gents I'm on a trip to the Pyrenees and noticed oil leaking past the Allen head bolt in the centre of theleft hand crankcase cover, on investigation the head fell off! It had obviously sheared and been glued back on.
My concern is that the threaded part will now work its way loose so am tempted to loctite it in place (oil is just weeping past the thread so I can live with that for a few days.
My question is what purpose does the bolt serve, as it is plastic I guess it is to access something behind it?
Thanks

That is access to the alternator-flywheel. Not much oil in there, just swirling round a bit when the engine is running.
If you can "bush repair" it in some way I wouldn't be too worried about it.
Just make sure it doesn't fall out on the way.

Thanks that's put my mind at rest, not sure the wife will be happy with a bush repair! Might use silicone instead.

Mine cracked and leaked - temporary solution was liberal application of liquid gasket which, once set, held everything in place and stopped oil seepage.

I still have my slight oil leak on the bottom left hand side of the engine which seems to drip down my side stand when the bike is left for a few days. I thin k it may be the clutch push rod seal.

Not sure what this means. Do I have to take the engine out or can I replace in situ?

Any advice welcome.
bic_bicknell

bic_bicknell

OK, I have had a search through old threads and there is a few regarding this issue. Some old, fondly remembered names like Big Ash, Jehad Joe etc, and a lot of write-ups about replacing this seal. Ill order up the parts from Jim Aim tomorrow and have a go.

Theres some mention about requiring to right tools to do the job easily - something about a puller. Anyone know what kind of tool this is? Big Ash said he just used a screwdriver and a hammer!

No big deal Bic.Same thing happened to me.Take the clutch cover off and remove what's needed to pull out the push rod.Pull out the old seal and tap in the new. While I was at it I replaced the oring on the gear selector thingy and gear shifter shaft but had the clutch out to put in a Pro shift spring so was a good time while the gear shift shaft was out. After 125,000kms these little things need replacing. The counter shaft seal is still good and the clutch pack is measuring like new specs.Apart from taking off and coming to a stand still,I very really use the clutch. On another note I will be very interested in what you think of the stainless cobra braketech rotors.I have recently changed my irons to stainless and like the more progressive feel than the brute force linear irons.Cheer

The special tools required are your Nana's nitting needles to poke through the clutch side after the push rod is removed to push out the seal.Once you start the job Bic,it will all fall into place.Cheers

Hi all
I've got an oil leak on my 06 990 and was wondering if there's a common place to look. There is oil dripping onto the front downpipe from the right hand side of the engine (when sitting on the bike looking forward) near the belly pan . Before I start ripping things apart, could anyone give me a heads up on the most likely spot for the leak?
