Oil tank leak....Help!

I just did my first oil change on the superduke. I followed joes great instructions, but now I have a small leak which appears to be coming from the angle fitting containing the tube screen to the rear of the oil tank drain plug.
Question....is there supposed to be an o ring apart from the green one on the base of the tube screen, as when I cleaned it I'm sure there was none.

Any suggestion? Should I have applied grease or silicon prior to nipping the cover plate up?

Thanks for any advice!

did you wreck one of the crush washers? I have never found a vehicle that is so sensitive to needing new crush washers each time

What crush washers?

The tank underside surface is bare apart from the green silicone ring on the tube screen. The lower angle contains a ball valve retained by a circlip.

My question is is there a seal missing? I am assuming that the green ring does the sealing between the two surfaces?

ahh sorry, the other location... you fitted the green gasket over the screen properly?

what did you torque the nuts too? ans it is a cast tank you can crack it by toquing it too much

10 nm torque. The green gasket seems a little " loose", don't know if it has grown? Mine is a 2007, but only 6000 k's on it. Still, I figure it should be OK. Is this a regular serviceable item? Thanks

Apologies for stating the obvious but....
Drain the oil from the tank via the front drain plug. Save oil to re fill.
Remove two bolts that hold the tube screen thingy.
Make sure the green o-ring is seated flat and properly on the tube screen-nipple thingy.
Ensure that the hole on the oil tank that it goes into does not have any obstructions and the seating surface is flat and clean.
Reinstall.
Feel for a tight seal and torque to spec.
I have changed my oil no less than 20 times and never had any issues.
Except that I spent a lot of money on those blasted seal and washers!

My first oil change is coming up, and reading through the forum I came across the jehadjoe oil change how to. Read it, and it seems like a pretty straightforward job if you take the time for it.
But now I read stuff about replacing rings and seals? What seals? Rings are the ones on the drainplugs I assume, or are there more rings to change?
All I have is a nice new ktm oilfilter and 4 liters of 10w50 motorex. (and some new washers for the drainplugs) Do I need anything else before I begin?

Well.... Looks like the leak is fixed!

I found the only shop ( one hour away) who had the green mesh filter seal in stock this morning. Got it, fitted it with a very small smear of grey silicone around the very outside perimeter of the face plate. I let that dry for a couple of hours then refilled the oil and test rode it. Seems to be holding.

As the bike has only done under 6K, I'm surprised this needed replacing, but the new one did seem to have a little more resistive tension when fastening the mounting bolts. At $10 I will only replace it yearly, as the filter was really clean and didn't really need cleaning other than for peace of mind.

Thanks to those who responded for your advice.

By the way I asked the mechanic at the KTM dealer about it..... He wasn't aware there was a filter there!
So much for your factory trained professional services.

Thanks Rosco

In my experience all gaskets, copper seals and rubber seals are single use. They should be replaced each time they are opened. Not expensive compared to main costs.
