Optimate & Battery Chargers

The GSXRs I used to have all had alarms. These always seemed to kill the battery over winter and during lengthy periods of non-use. It's not quite the same problem with my superduke though as a) it doesn't have an alarm and b) I just wanna be out riding it all the time.

Anyway.....the owners manual says the battery should be disconnected from the bike - or at least the earth taken off - when putting it on charge. I was thinking of cabling the bike up so I could simply just plug it in to keep the battery nice and cosy.

Anyone else already got their bike hooked up to a Optimate or the like and anyone experienced any problems. THE last thing I want t do is fry the electrics on it.

Thanks,

Simon.

Optimate is prob one of the best things to buy for your bike..... had mine for about 8 years now, been on several different bikes, just connect it up every time i put the bike away and i know it will be fully charged and ready to go the next time i want to use it......saved myself as ive never had to replace a battery since, did many years ago on a Honda NC30 which cost me £90....... learned my lesson then.

I'm assuming that an Optimate is the same thing as a Battery Tender? Trickle charger, that monitors the charge level and cuts out when its topped, only coming on again when they charge drops below a set level.

If this is the case, they are worth their weight in GOLD.

I use the optimate when I remember (about once a month or so).

I have never yet had any battery problems in 2 years

Simon not long got my SD. First job was to fit plug n play alarm – very easy job to do, just as it says on the tin, the alarm is of good quality too, cost £200.

Second job, to extend the permanent battery connection wires supplied with Optimate n has a fused link built in, (solder about 4ft of double core cable in between battery connections and connection at other end of Optimate supplied cable). Feed this up from battery to under seat position.

Now every time I come back from a ride I chain up SD, then remove seat n connect Optimate, with alarm immobilised but not armed fully.

You shouldn’t have any probs.
