Whats the maximum number of bars you can get on your console smoky? and what year is the bike?

To answer your questions:
Rad Fan goes on at just after 9 bars as in it hits nine bars then goes on before it hits 10 (if you get my drift). When does your fan go on?
The bike is now stock except for AKs and the map. When it overheated it was on stock pipes with stock map.

For your suggestions:
1. They reckon they flushed it twice and raised the front wheel etc and made sure there was no air bubbles.
2. Coolant level is more than sufficient as I said above min and below max when cool (ie no bars)
3. Not sure about the faulty water pump though it was suggested that I ride with higher RPM ie above chugging speed in the right gear. Which sometimes I ride with too high a gear so that may be part of it but I doubt it.
4. The fan really pushes some air mate when it is going. The thermostat may not have been tested I will ask them on Saturday if they tested it.
5. It has been flushed and drained twice that I am aware of. The latest coolant is ICE if that makes any difference.
6. Was stock pipe when overheating but now is AKs without baffles so pretty sure not clogged
7. Airbox wasnt open and it now has the AKs and AK map.

Dont get me wrong thankyou very much for the advice I'm just passing on the facts.

Anyone else wanna chip in? I've read about other bikes overheating or running hot did you manage to fix it?

Anyone know how to get in contact with KTM to get rid of the BS from the dealer?

Cheers.

definitely a sensor issue.

My fan comes on when the heat hits 5.

Need to get that setting changed pretty quickly mate.

They do run hot,

the manual advises ride faster. I choose to take them at their word. Newcastle's been pretty hot recently, some 40+ degree days.

Managed not to overheat during the toy run though I needed to get some air into the rad a couple of times by going round the block individually.

she's an 07, not sure about the max number of bars, never seen more then 6 or 7...
never came even close to overheating, so i never really payed attention to when the fan come on... but i did hear it going, and i was not at 10 bars, that's for sure...

as you said, when the fan blows, if fooking blows good, so... it kinda looks like the thermostat... that's not bad news - easy fix and not very expensive. since you're in hotter climate, consider swapping for the one that goes off at lower temp... iv'e seen them on ebay before...
cheers!

Thanks alot guys for all the suggestions. I think it's time to switch dealers.

Is it OK to flush it using the hose? Or should I go and drop some cash and flush it with distilled?

Had the same issue yesterday with my new SDR.

Talked to dealership and they told me it could be a possible air bubble in the cooling system.

I should run it through some more heat cycles and check the overflow bottle regularly to make sure my fluid level hasn't dropped.

Hey guys, just looking for some opinions here. I have an 08' SDR thats been having problems. The gauges have been indicating that the bike is overheating so they were replaced and nicely covered by the factory. My mechanic at Z Racing thought that this was the problem. The 1st ride out was just great with no problems. 2nd ride just this past weekend was back to the same, digital gauges telling me the bike is overheating while Im riding on the freeway at 75 mph with the tempature outside at about 85 degrees. Also, when Im riding at lets say 80 mph the gauge tends to jump around and tell me Im doing 100 momentarily and then go back to where it should be. The only thing Ive done to the bike was put on some FMF Apex's and have it re-mapped. The mechanic says the bike is running fine and not overheating and that Im getting a mis-reading. I believe that but when your ridinng and the bike is telling me otherwise its very concerning. Let me know what you guys think and thanks for any and all responses they are very appreciated.

I would think the sending unit for the temp is giving you the issues.

My bike does the same thing with the speedo. My low fuel light also goes on and off at random times. I've not noticed a problem with the temp gauge though. Have you had any electrical issues, i.e., replaced the regulator / rectifier?
Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

Sounds like it could be rectifier regulator to me.

Thanks for the responses guys. The rectifier was my 1st guess, I will be getting it back into the shop in the next couple weeks and will let you all know how it goes.

Well it appears that the guys at Z Racing have finally discovered why my SDR was giving me false readings. Apparently the speedo wire and the temp. gauge wire were rubbing together behind the headlamp mask and the hosing was completely gone making for an improper ground. Ive had the bike out 4 times since and so far so good. I cant thank the guys at Z enough for taking the time and finally figuring this out. Ive read some other guys having similar issues as I have. Have a look behind your headlamp mask, some shrinkwrap over the bare wire should cure the problem.
