Painted or just polished plastic

Does anyone know if the black rear seat cover for the 1290 is painted or just polished black plastic? I'm hoping it polished black plastic. It comes in a plastic bag with a thin protective film over it. The cover has many fine scratches in it and I tried polishing them out with polishing compound and a foam buffer pad on a drill. It lightened them up some and would like to really get into polishing, but I'm afraid that if its paint I might go through the paint before they are illiminated.

No paint just black plastic, I thought about getting a design hydro dipped on mine but I’ve already spent over £3000 on bits for my 1290 and I can only push my luck so far before the wife finds out.
