Power Commander fitted today!.......

Just got back from Dynojet UK in preston where I had a power commander and DNA filter fitted. First of all I have to say it's in all our interests to tell one another about good and bad service, that way we don't get shafted. Well this is all good! Dynojet UK is run by Frank Wrathall Developments, these are the bods responsible for the Sobbart Honda BSB team, so they know their sh*t! Because this is the UK HQ, you know you are going to get the mapping right on a dyno that is probably one of the most accurate in the country. The guy who did the work was fantastic, he showed me every aspect of the fitting, what did what and why, showed me progress between runs and explained everything in detail. On top of that, I can twirl the spanners a bit myself, but this guy took exceptional care of everthing he took off or did to the bike, as you can tell, I was well impressed. Because my bike was being used to develop their database of maps for the SD, I got the fitting free, the dyno time free(approx 4 hours) and 25% off the price of the power commander. Result!
My bike has the full Akrapovic system, with KTM map loaded. I let them fit a DNA filter with the PC, but to be honest it made no difference to the peformance, less than .5 bhp at peak power, so if your fitting one as a performance upgrade, save your money, the dyno never lies!
The first run was a base map, nothing fitted, just as standard. This showed 120.78 bhp and max torque of 73.14. They were good curves but the KTM map has it running slightly lean at all RPM. All in all, they did more than 50 runs, but these are the important ones.
With the PC fitted and mapped, baffles in, 124.29 bhp max torque 75.98. Baffles out only .91 bhp increase at peak power, 125.20 bhp max torque 76.84. Uncorrected without DIN smoothing thats 126.69bhp! The graph shows an increase in power between 6,400 and 8,600 rpm the best being about a 2.5 bhp increase at 7,400 rpm. Just shows how good the baffles are at killing noise and not power.

These are the graphs. Sorry about the quality of my scanner.

This shows the standard KTM Akra map(blue) and the PC map (Red)[img]

The graph along the bottom shows air/fuel mixture. The dotted red line in the middle is optimum fueling, the solid blue line is the KTM map showing the bike running lean accross the rev range. The solid red line is the PC fueling, you can barely see the dotted red line underneath because the PC fueling is bang on the line.

This map shows PC fitted baffles in (red) and baffles out (blue). You can see the increase in power and torque between 6,400 and 8,600rpm. Note the air/fuel mixture on the bottom graph, both bang on.[/img]Image

Screw you Dr F. Now I have to get one.

So where's the ride report?? Impressions....??

Hi Dr F,

Well done! Proved again too - filters do jack shit for power.
This is also good news for the baffles - as I have fitted them back in, the noise was a little over the top for my grandfather tastes.

I guess that means my dyno chart is still pending! I am really looking forward to comparing it with yours. My intention is to increase bottom end power and gain a little midrange.. let me see how i did. (Dyno for me i approx 2 weeks off) from

Great work Dr. F.

I'm very curious to hear your riding impressions! That's what it's all about after all.

I have a full Akra with the corresponding fuel map and the air/fuel graph looks significantly worse than yours.

Too lean, too rich throughout the midrange (fuel consuption) and too lean again in the upper rev range. So here's a lot more room for improvement. The bike puts out 121HP now so no complains about performance.

I don't agree on the DNA filter though. Below a before-after graph from a DNA filter (not my bike). Made under identical conditions only 15 minutes apart with a completely stock bike. Run, drop in the filter and run again. It really works and the performance increase shown in the graph is in line with my own rinding impressions and from others who fitted one.

As you say, the Dyno never lies...

KTMax, re the filter.... most people see an increase from filters as they swap a dirt old paper filter for a new clean washable then dyno. Shock horror a power increase!!

Why you would spend $100 dynoing after fitting a $100 filter is beyond me??

That is why u see increases - nothing more. It has been proven to death. There is only one exception I will believe and that is if the OEM filter is a poor design and the reusable is better flowing.
