Quick Throttle Modification

Gregz

Gregz

I have modified my throttle to be a race or quickturn throttle. This setup gives the twist less than 1/4 turn.

If you are a dirt ride or race - you will probably appreciate this mod. But remember... there is never anything easy but I try and keep things usually cheap. (Oh sorry no pics... but have a look through Google - I am sure you will find details on the internet)

Quickthrottle the cheap way is as follows:
1) remove the throttle tube
2) find a thin cable tie that is the same width as the the cable runner - about 3mm
3) cut the cable tie to the correct length as the cicumference of the cable runner
4) warm up your soldering iron and 'weld' the cable tie all the way around (glue or screw down if you prefer)
5) the the whole lot back and adjust slack.

The downside of this is you need to adjust throttle slack at the throttle boddies which means...u guessed it... tank off, airbox lid and filter off.

This will give you less than 1/4 throttle turn and is brilliant....UNLESS you ride on bumpy roads!!

AWSOME KTMax!...all I can say - it is awsome!
This is a mod for personal preference no performance.
Keep in mind that if your not twisting that trottle to full you are not going fast enough

(keep in mind... I always ride quick throttle bikes - esp my dirt bikes)

Thanks Rigga, done once and all sorted out ages ago.

Plipton, well in this particular case - class me as mad!
I have done the 'ramp' before - but I just could not be bothered this time.

To be honest - I actaully did not 'invent' the ramp.. this was used on the earlier Speed Triples to help clean up their crap injection. They used an oval throttle assembly.

This is a good variation for all those people wanting both worlds - it will just take more time and effort cutting & welding the cabletie to the throtle tube.

If anyone wants to try it without it being permanent:
- Use multiple layers of electrical tape cut to the correct width
- Fit to throttle body and only adjust at the throttle (ie. don't take the airbox apart)

If you choose to keep it.. you will need to make this permanent as the tape will prob fall off after a while; and could get jammed.

What about this as a quick and easy way of making a ramp on the last 1/2 turn of the standard throttle tube. Fill part of the cable groove with something like plastic from a hot glue gun, then use a hot piece of wire or a needle file to trim the excess and create a ramp for the cable to run in. If the shape isn't right, just add more glue then reshape. Also easily removed if it does'nt work. You would have a bit of measuring to do, and a bit of trial and error, but I think it would work. The other plus is that you wouldn't have to take the tank off to adjust the slack in the cable, because you are only altering the cable length from 1/2 to full throttle, not at tickover.

In fact it's such a good idea I think I might try it myself when I've got the bike back togather.

I would just do the same on the closing cable. They wouldn't have to be identical, just as close as poss, if anything, ramp the closing cable slightly less so it won't affect the opening cable but will keep the tension. You can buy a plastic 'ramp' insert for Suzuki's, but they arn't popular because they charge £25 for it. Their argument is that it's cheaper than buying a quick action throttle, which it is, but they can't see that people still see it for what it is, a rip off!
I had a Laverda once that had exceptionaly long travel on the throttle, I fixed this by removing the cable bell crank from the butterfly spindle, lengthening the mounting hole with a needle file, then replacing it so the radius it traveled was less. This would work on the SD, but would have the same problem as Gregz, it would affect the whole travel of the throttle making it snatchy at the bottom end.

A Hah!... Correct everyone! - this is exactly why I did not

Think of creating an oval dial or modifying the throttle acutator at the bodies to make an eliptical pulley.

Anyway... before you get too tied up trying to fix the mod - go try my mod and see if it actaully needs extra complication. For the 10min mod and 5cents hardware (and just adjusting at the throttle tensioner) you may be surprised. With my mods I have no snatchiness at any rpm.

As mentioned regardless of throttle the bike gets snatchty on putholes and bumps as my hand moves. For the guys in Sydney (I am sure I will get a resounding uh..humph in agreement) this is especially noticable on Parramatta Rd around Flemmington.

For those that are still not too sure what we mean here is a buy now option for the Ninja from :

Now one more thing - to make it easy, you can buy a quick turn throttle for the Ducati's here:
I am sure you could use this info to create your ramped throttle for the SD if you so choose to deem this necessary.

Finally if you want to design or buy, here it is. Although I am not sure what type it is...ie what model bike is to be used. US$93.00

LOL - I am always controvercial.

What I would like to see is less talk and more action! Ihope a few of you could go get some electrical tape and and make an add hock quick throttle and post their veiws on the newsgroup!

I am happy to hear both good and bad reports.. we all have different styles and prefrences. But to comment - you need to try it. OK - I have now given you all permission to go hence forth and modify with electrical tape, in 5 minutes your throttle cam for evaluation purposes.

I have now modified the quickthrottle making an ecentric cam design as the G2. This is easily done using a soldering iron. This cost me another 5 minutes... it is a tough life.

Hi, you can do it at either end... but I do it on the throttle tube as it is plastic and much easier. Just glue or solder a cable tie under where the cable runs inside the throttle grip.
Sorry, no pics at the moment.... but when you pull the grip off you will see where the cable runs.

I did a mod on the Tuono just like this with some 30mm plumbing waste pipe, tapered the edges to be more gradual though.
