Starter noise...

Has anyone else had a nasty noise like a grating yelp - metal on metal sound - when starting the bike up but it fails to fire. It's intermitant and I've heard the sound twice now but wondered whether it's my bike specific or a general problem? It sounds like it's coming from the starter motor?? [/b]

yes, mine has done it once. My RsvR used to do it once in a while and it would happen mainly when the battery was no longer in top form. Make sure you push on the starter button a little longer and you'll be fine. Putting the battery on a trickle charger won't hurt either

Mine doing it more then once or twice. The shop boys said the clutch relief valve. Ill have to check my parts book. It sounds bad but not doing any damage so they say!

My 950 Adventure used to do it too but I've read stuff that sez its nothing to worry about...

Thanks Spo.
Mine had started to make the shrapnel bomb starter noise more often so I phoned up the dealers/workshop today and they're taking it in to replace the starter motor. Whilst he was on the phone I thought I'd ask if there was anyway they could sort out the fuel reading, I explained the reserve light coming on yet the tank still appearing quater full... he said that was the first they'd heard of that problem!!!!!! But would see if KTM had issued any info on it. Yep a long shot I know.

My starter has started making this noise.
In slow moving traffice yesterday, bike suddenly cuts out, has done this before but fires up ok. However yesterday made point of no throttle, push button & just a sound like 'grating gears' for 2 or 3 attempts, then fires up no problem. The same scenario happened a couple more times. I then let the bike cool for 1/2 hour & again the crunching noise is enough to set of the next bike's alarm!

I leave the bike for a couple hours & fire it up again (cases still lukewarm) and out of 3 starts the noise is there once.

So this morning I thought I'd try it again & record the noise to play to my dealer over the phone (because he's 60 miles away) but gues what - normal starting.

What is the latest situ regarding updated parts/known problem - the bike has done 400 miles and was new 2/9/06, should I get this looked at now or is it OK to use for the next week or so when it has it's first service done?

Spooky - mine's doing exactly the same after approx 500 miles from new.

Gonna have 1st service next week so will bring it up.

Also, anyone noticed a rear wheel "wobble" when winding on the power coming out of a bend..?! I'm suspecting it's because there's so much torque and my suspension may need setting up differently?

I must admit I don't understand all the physics of damping, rebound and preload.
