Steering damper question

I recently installed a wp damper on my 08 superduke. It has a bit of play where it screws into the bracket underneath the tank. Is that normal, it seems i could remedy this with a thicker washer. However, I was unsure if this play was built in. Please advise.

Really no one here with an sd r can go to the bike and see if the thing wiggles a bit?
