Suspension Adjusments

I remember reading in a review that the suspension adjustments are very easy to do on the side of the road. How long does it take to make the adjustments from "sporty firm" to "bad road soft"? I understand that initially the trial and error in establihing base lines will take some time. But once you have these settings are the various adjustments really that simple?
