Tank Spoilers Necessary?

I was just wondering if anyone has much experience riding the SD with the tank spoilers removed...by which I mean the big plastic "wings" on either side of the tank with the word Super DUKE written on them...I prefer the look of the SD without them and when removed it does provide easier access to various parts and bits...BUT, I am wonderng if you think that the spoiler actually protects the radiator in a any sort of slide or crash? They do provide some sort of cover I suppose...anyone seen SDs ridden without the spoilers? Do they provide any serious streamlining or wind protection to the rider and more importantly to me...do they really provide any sort of real protection to the radiator, etc.

Has anyone seen any other sort of radiator protectors for sale?...I have R+G crash sliders but they don't seem to do much for the radiator.
Thanks,
Rob
