Touring Screen Idea ( Closure )

Hi all,

First post here.

Have posted on ktmduke.de before under the same username.

Did a luggage post there where I fabricated a Baglux Whopper bag to fit my Superduke seat. I traveled 1600 miles in a week with no probs.

Now I am getting ready for my 2007 assault on the Franch Alps.

I have been looking at Touring screens for my Superduke.

Only one I have found is the Ermax and it does'nt really do the job.

You have to drill into the headlight faring and I dont wont to do that!

Also there is the MRA but I have yet to see a picture.

So, I have been thinking.....

It costs £80.00 and I only have one chance of getting it right but how about

Taking a 2005 950 Adventure Screen and fabricating it with a little help from a hot air torch?

Folding the edegs over and drilling small holes on the side of the headlight faring that can be pluged with a gromit when screen is taken off after touring.

See Pics and give your opinion please.

Hey Plipton You Donkey!!

I am just over the water!

Fancy that, another Channel Islander.

Cool!! :

I dont know anyone with an Adventure but I will go and talk to the boys at Bikers and see if they can put me in touch with someone.

Dont think the lender will let me bake there screen though!

I dont think it will look to bad when fitted if I can get it to look factory.

Also there is the MRA but I have yet to see a picture.

I tried my best to drum up enough support on this forum to get MRA to go into production with their prototype SD Vario Touring screen, but there was so much negative stuff from people who derided the very idea for a screen, I deleted all the posts and gave up - because I was always going to get one anyway. Like the guy that bragged about riding thousands of miles a week at 3 digit speeds, who thought anyone who wanted a screen was a pussy. Obviously the windblast was being deflected by the huge balls sat on top of his fuel tank...

Anyway, I am in possession of the one and only never to be sold MRA prototype screen and it works superbly. The 10 position adjustable aerofoil on the top is great and easily adjustable whilst riding. The whole thing 5 minutes to take off and I for one, can live with the four button head screws left in the headlamp mask. You could however velcro it on, if you were really against drilling into your bike.

All academic really, thanks to the 'neggies' on this forum.

I think the next time I go a certain distance from home I'll screw some improvised metacrylate/polycarbonate thing just for a few days...

Offered up an Adventure screen to my Superduke headlight fairing today.

It looks good even without any mods.

Ordered one, should be here in a week.

Only £28.00!! ( All screens for Adventure are the same from 2003 on available in light tint )

By covering all of the head light fairing there will be no need to try scrubing bug guts off after a long trip either!

Screen delayed by UPS!

Now here but my bike is in for her second service.

Not only that but the crank case seal my dealer fixed last year has gone again!

So have to wait for parts from KTM, ( God knows when they will arrive! )

Should have my bike back in two weeks then I will fit the screen.

Word of warning fellas. I bought the KTM official touring screen as I'm off to the Isle of Man TT on Thurs and thought I'd give it a go.

I would give you a riders report however although Jersey Bikers claim to have 2 or 3 available, they are selling stuff that they dont have in stock.

I bought and paid for mine on the 07th April and STILL DONT HAVE IT !!!

Phoned to moan last Thurs and the bloke to speak wasnt available but would phone me back. Guess what no reply !!!

I can see the potential benefit too. However, the strange experience I have is that the SD turned to be a much more comfortable touring bike for me than the 950 ADV I had before it.

Last week we did a trip through the Eifel in Germany and did some 1300 KMs of twisty roads in 3 days. For me the riding position on the SD is much better, the seat is MUCH better and the absence or turbulence and the deafening noise from the ADV fairing makes a night & day difference. At the end of an 8 hour ride I climb off the SD much fitter than I did from the ADV who is supposed made for that sort of thing.

Obviously the stress of the windblast highly depends on your clothing too. In thight leathers 150 to 160 KM/H is fine for longer distances.

I am curious if an extended screen will generate turbulence and noise again.

Dr F,

I dont think there will be any VAT as its second hand but thats something you will have to check.

I think if you are buying it for yourself there will be no VAT.

Its a 2005 bike.

Hey Baggi, a ZZR-1400 you say, well, here's a clue,

You could be right!

Time for closure.

I want to thank superduke forum members for the wealth of info here.

I especially found the pulling of the throttle sensor wires thread a quality and FREE! upgrade.

I have had such a great time riding my Superduke.

I will never forget the switch from my K3 GSX-R1000.

The first and every time I jumped on the Duke, I felt like I could ( and did )

Take other road vehicles before they knew I had done it!

Overtaking was so easy on twisty B roads where I live.

However, with my impending mid life crisis looming I have decided to give the sports bike another go, before my back gives out!

Long distance touring is not where the Superduke lives.

Waited to see what the new Hayabusa was going to be like, did'nt think much of it so went for a ZZR-1400.

Safe Riding Friends....
