should be safe to repair, but as Dr F says only if it's cheap.

1/2 a tyre left is only worth repairing if it costs less than 1/2 a tyre's new price. If not bung a new tyre on plastic

Remember, 1/2 a tyre might be only 1/4 of a tyre once you allow for minimum tread depth .....

I have a 500 mile tyre the pirelli scorpion? that I took off and had patched, but i am not such a tight ass to buy a new tyre, I tend to be a tyre freak, I want new tyre and I want the best ones I can buy, and I dont like worrying about them going flat. and I want a matched set, I dont replace them one at a time. and I dont like to pass out on my bike to wake up to a $24,000 bill, and I dont like to sneeze yet!

3mm sounds like a relatively big hole to bung. I had a decent plug put in by the RAC when I got a puncture, but they recommended that I didn't exceed 40mph or 280 miles on it. Probably a standard cover my arse disclaimer. This was one of the tyre on the wheel puncture repairs. Bike shop repairs are guaranteed to be as good as the tyre was before the puncture, but they do involve remving the tyre and patching it from the inside.

I'd see if a shop will repair it and if they will, work out if it is worth the cash. If a bike shop won't fix it I'd trust their judgement and not fix it myself at home, specially not with one of the kits that repairs the puncture with the tyre still on the wheel. They are not as good as the proper shop jobbies and IMO not worth the risk.

I've had loads of tyres patched from the inside by professional tyre fitters and have never had a problem. They take the tyre of the rim, clean the inside around the hole, apply a proper vulcanising patch mushroom thingy from the inside and then pack it all back together. Get it all rebalanced and then never any more problems. Just as long as its not in the sidewall.. Friendly bike tyre dude does it for about £15.. Best if you can take a loose wheel in..
