valve check

on friday i started the bike to go for a first ride of the season, all excited, started gearing up, when i noticed a small oil leak from oil tank drain screw. i just changed oil, so i figured maybe i didn't tightened it enough, i gave it a 1/4 turn, and the thread just let go. i guess i overtightened it ? there was not much resistance there, and no, i did not use my torque wrench... it was my small ratchet, i never broke anything with that... anyway, the plug now spins in either direction, but will not come out, or tighten after some fooking around i drained the oil, took the oil tank off, still cant get the drainplug out.

so now the oil tank is in a shop to be drilled and re-taped, and i figured it's a good time for checking the valves.

has anyone done it themselves? any tips? thanks!

ok, front was ok, though the exhaust valves were
L: .25mm
R: .30mm

right one should be done soon, but for now i want to get out and ride, i think i'll just leave it be

intakes both ~.120mm on both front and back, so pretty much perfect...

rear cyl exhaust were too tight, ~.20 both... HD did not have them in stock, i shuld have them tommorow or wed...

surprisingly the shims under the rear exhaust were RR: 2.48, RL 2.50... i thought that was odd, i read that KTM, unlike HD or aprilia made shims every .050mm... these look like 2.475 and 2.500.

yes you should use the KTM locking tool, which is just a long bolt that locks the engine so that it does not move... i did not. i put her in gear and i was very, very carefull not to move ANYTHING while the cams were off. they were off for maybe 2-3min. i lifted them out, pick up the bucket with a magnet, measureed the shims and i put it all back the way it was. then the next cyl.

i'll write up a short "How to", but not today.

cheers guys!
