I use Silkoleyne pro 4 plus 10/50 fully synthetic and is around £11 per litre. If you cant get hold of it, any local stealer should be able to get some in for you. Some people use 10/40 but the 10/50 is recommended and makes the bike run cooler I believe .

I got some 10w50 fully synthetic for Hein Gericke and it cost £30 for 4 litres.

My local KTM dealer wanted nearer £50 for Silkolene, the KTM recommended oil.

When he found out what oil I had brought he sneered and gave me a lecture about how KTM is a comparable to a Ferrari and not some typical Japanese inline 4 and needed to be treated differently.

I used to work on the Shell brand and got to learn a lot about oil. Honestly in my opinion you're best not scrimping on oil, or how regularly you change it, the more the better if you want your engine to last. So that said I always go for good quality fully synthetic - but also usually get 10/50 because it's more readily available. This number indicated the optimum temperatures the oil works in and I don't believe you really get a performance decrease by using 10/50 or 10/40 in the UK climate. It's more important that you get good quality oil and not cheap stuff. The brand doesn't matter so much. When I first got a Ducati, years ago, I used to think I needed to get hold of Agip and spent loads of time and effort finding it - what a fool

Hey Big P. Don't worry, I often use the old chip pan oil when I'm a bit skint. Seems to work fine....even smells like the old Castrol Oil (Cazzy R) that I used to run my two strokes on. You got to make sure you strain out the old bits of burned potato but hey, that's what an oil filter's for right?

I would not recommend the Hein Gericke oil.

Local HG shop told me their own labelled oil was produced by Motul, so if true, it was a good deal.

The HG oil was toast in no time. I went back to quality (expensive) oil and normal service was resumed.

Al3x,

How could I tell the Hein Gericke oil was past it?

The key indicator was that it stank like old overheated (toasted in the engine) very high mileage oil. In my teens I worked in an auto garage and we occassionaly saw and smelt this when some one had missed a number of oil changes. The Hein Gericke oil in my bike got into this state in about 1,500 / 2,000 miles. This is the usual mileage before I change the oil.

I usually use Motul / Silkolene-Fuchs / Motorex in the Superduke, never had this problem before, never had it since, riding style etc has not changed before, during or after.

Lots of dealers and mechanics have recommend Putoline 10w60 to me, which I now use. I find my bikes burns less oil when I use it, and have run all my KTMs on it. It also has a wide temp rating, so it's good across the whole UK climate and stays viscous on hot days and high temps.

I'm currently using Motul 5100 10W50 that I'm buying in bulk (16lt cartons) from Opie oils where we get a discount.
I will be using it in the SD when its run in and I am using it in the Enduro bikes.
Its a good compromise IMO: good quality oil without being needlessly expensive.
